AS YOU WISH
Synopsis
Two soldiers from enemy nations each turn to their god in their respective places of worship, praying for divine help to kill the enemy. Their gods grant these requests.
On the day of battle, the gods—having forgotten the specifics—ask their servants again about their wishes. Each warrior repeats the deadly request, and their gods reply simply, “So be it.” The warriors then proceed to fight and kill one another, fulfilling their exact, tragic wish.
Creators’ Statement: Naïveté of Human Thought
In As You Wish, we address the profound foolishness of human thinking about ourselves and our relationship with our gods.
To convey this complex idea clearly, we used a simple narrative structure and intentionally employed visual and verbal means that border on the crude. This simplicity is a deliberate choice: it serves to emphasize the naïveté of human thought when confronting ourselves and our concept of the divine. The film is a clear, yet unsettling, reflection on the danger of unchecked desire.
Production Insight
This film showcases the power of our hand-drawn, low-tech animation to handle complex philosophical ideas. By stripping away visual complexity, we focus the viewer’s attention entirely on the absurd and circular logic of the warriors’ prayers and their ultimate, self-inflicted fate.
