HOOK
Synopsis
A man stands atop a circular surface and casts his fishing hook with all his strength. Contrary to his—and our—expectations, because he is standing on a sphere, the hook curves naturally around it and returns from behind, catching him instead.
In the fleeting moment between feeling ensnared by the hook and imagining it has caught something for him, he pulls the rod with all his might. He is yanked off the ground, suspended in space, and through the hook, embarks on a solitary, endless journey across the cosmos.
Creators’ Statement: Reaping What We Sow
The fundamental idea of this film is that whatever humans do ultimately returns to them—in other words, we reap what we sow.
The hook wounds its catch, but the fisherman does not care. This fundamental law of nature, which is so often ignored by humans, is illustrated in this film in a stark and poetic way. We use the simple, absurd visual of the hook returning to its caster to convey this unavoidable truth about consequence and karma.
Production Insight
The speed and precision of HOOK (just 32 seconds) are crucial to its punchy, impactful message. The use of the hand-drawn, low-tech method gives the spherical world a clean, essential quality, focusing the entire visual experience on the moment of cosmic consequence when the man is snatched into his endless journey.
