IN OUT
Synopsis
The film begins by drawing us into an enclosed space, where the distant, enticing sound of sea waves drifts through the air. We follow this sound through a labyrinth of winding corridors and rooms, experiencing a subtle sense of disorientation. The journey is rewarded as we eventually emerge from the confinement to reach the open sea, where we can finally watch the waves move and shimmer without barrier.
Creators’ Statement: Blending Ink Lines and Architecture
IN OUT is an abstract film inspired by the idea of creating a visual illusion of waves through the drawing—or erasure—of ink lines.
To heighten the experience of observing the final waves, we first crafted an interior space designed to evoke a subtle sense of disorientation and fatigue in the viewer. For visual precision, we took an unusual step: we first built a small physical model—a labyrinth that could be explored with a handheld camera. Filming within this model guided the final design of the corridor in the animation, blending spatial exploration with the flowing fluidity of the sea.
Production Insight
At 1 minute and 44 seconds, this film demonstrates our commitment to detailed, low-tech world-building. The combination of the conceptual approach (ink lines as waves) and the physical, handcrafted model for spatial design showcases the depth of the creative process at Aperture Animations.
