OVER SHOT
Synopsis
An archer draws his bow with such extreme force that, tragically, he himself perishes before the arrow even leaves the string. In the inevitable consequence of this ultimate exertion, it is the arrow and the bow that gently follow after the archer, concluding the cycle of sacrifice.
Creators’ Statement: The Soul of Arash
This idea is directly inspired by an ancient Persian legend concerning Arash, the greatest archer of Iran. Arash was chosen to end a war by shooting an arrow to determine the new border. Out of profound love for his homeland, he poured all his life and passion into the bow, and the arrow flew to the farthest possible point, expanding Iran’s borders. In truth, Arash shoots his very soul and sacrifices his life for his country.
OVER SHOT does not seek to depict that event literally, but rather offers a contemporary reflection on the structure and meaning of ancient myths. It is a visual exploration of how absolute dedication can lead to both ultimate achievement and ultimate loss.
Production Insight
The brief duration of OVER SHOT (just 29 seconds) is crucial, focusing the viewer entirely on the moment of sacrificial effort. Our hand-drawn, low-tech animation style emphasizes the archer’s vulnerability and the stark beauty of the bow and arrow following him, honoring the poetic nature of the ancient tale.
